Glutinous or waxy type of corn is due to a waxy recessive gene and located in chromosome9. The gene results to grain which has a marble-like opacity with hardness similar to normal corn. Glutinous corn is consumed as food at green corn stage or a feed for livestock. At physiological maturity, it is also utilized as 'kornik', which is essentially a dehulled, deep fried glutinous corn grain. This has become a major food industry in the Ilocos region. Despite the growth of the industry, however, breeding research has been very nil. The authors developed some hybrids and populations with improved agronomic performance in order to elevate the level of productivity in the presently available commercial cultivars. In the work on hybrids, top crossing of different early generation inbreds to some elite parents were made. Inbreds were also grouped according to their combination pattern. One hybrid (PG8×Lagkit) performed very well in terms of yield. In the sensory evaluation conducted at green corn stage, PG8 x Lagkit and Lagkitan × macapuno were the most preferred entries. In the work on populations, LB Lagkitan, Macapuno and Honeycorn underwent intra-population improvement through half-sib selection. The improved cycles, in addition to being better open-pollinated cultivars could also be the source of better hybrids in the future. With this, the industry can look forward to better cultivars, in terms of productivity and quality as base for their possible expansion.
