Protoplast fusion of Xylaria sp. for enhanced plastic-degrading ability and use of mixed culture of Trichoderma activator for rapid composting of biodegradable municipal wastes

Albino mutants were produced from the wild type (black-pigmented) xylariaceous fungus that have better capability to degrade and utilize synthetic polymers that are persistent pollutants such as polyethylene and its derivatives, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000, Tween 80 and tannic acid. The mutants per se have potential applications for cleanup of wastes/wastewater containing these materials. Dominant markers were also identified in the wild type and mutants that can guide the selection of fusants of the wild type and mutant(s). Good quality compost was produced from market biowastes using mixed culture of Trichoderma and Xylaria (wild type) regardless whether the biowastes were placed in draining bin or not. Results of chemical analyses show that C:N was 7-8, total NPK contents of 7.7%, OM content of 30% and moisture content of only 20%. The basic requirements for the nutrient contents of compost as required by FPA were satisfied. Composting period was 46 days, however the very low C:N ratio of the final product seem to show that composting was completed in about 5 weeks or 35-40 days.
