A survey was conducted to generate data on plant, animal and microbial biotechnology researches, institutions and researchers involved for the last ten years (1998-2008) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Data gathered were uploaded in a database program to have a client oriented database and determine the status and directions of researches, and determine possible issues and concerns that limit technology transfer/patent or full commercialization. Majority of the researches are still of the traditional type such as fermentation and tissue culture. However, there is an increase in the number of researches involving DNA based detection kits, cloning, mutagenesis and genetic engineering for plant and microbial biotechnologies. There are also a greater number of researchers able to conduct higher level of biotechnology work, after obtaining their PhD's abroad. Status R and D [research and development] of most researches are at the bench scale, whereby further optimization and field trials are needed before commercialization. However, many microbial based researches are already in the semi-commercial stage of testing and some already with technology adapters. The strong government support and farmers' acceptance of the technology/product are major reasons behind the success of such technologies. Institutions involved in biotechnology research include the three research arms of the University, the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB) and the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC). Other institutions include the College of Agriculture and its clusters, College of Arts and Sciences, PhilRice, Philippine Carabao Center and Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau. Due to limited time and resources, there are only 137 entries in the database. It is recommended that a phase 2 of the project be granted to fine tune data presentation and gather more entries for the database.
