Pioneer report on in vitro regeneration of four (4) endangered Philippine orchid species

The demand for Philippine orchids in the international trade has contributed to the problem of over collection therefore threatening their existence in the wild. One way to mitigate the threatened existence of indigenous orchids in the wild is to regenerate them through in vitro culture and reintroduce the regenerated plantlets in the natural habitat of the species. Fruit capsules of four orchid species with no reported in vitro regeneration protocol namely Aerides lawrenciae (IUCN: vulnerable), Dendrobium sanderae (IUCN: endangered), Eria ornata and Vanda merrillii (CITES), were collected from the wild, surface sterilized and cultured in vitro using the standard Knudson C medium. Successful regeneration was achieved and regenerants are presently in different culture stages from germination to rooting. Plantlets of Aerides lawrenciae, Dendrobium sanderae major and Vanda merrillii were established ex vitro and distributed to collaborators in Makiling Botanic Garden, Palawan and Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao. Additional seven species in the CITES list which have reported in vitro regeneration protocol were also cultured namely, Dendrobium heterocarpum, Grammatophyllum speciosum, Phalaenopsis amabilis, Phalaenopsis schilleriana, Spathoglottis plicata, Vanda lamellata and Vanda sanderiana. Several regenerants from these species have been established ex vitro, some are in the rooting stage and plantlet, from four species were distributed for reintroduction.
