The study is part of the project 'Almaciga Resin Production and Market Opportunity for Upland Communites in Karagan Valley, New Bataan, Province of Compostella Valley'. The potential of Karagan Valley as the Philippines' next major producer of almaciga resin was determined by looking at the relative exploitation volume and available stand of almaciga trees within two Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) areas. Manila copal pruduction capacity was assessed through a tapping experiment on 10 almaciga trees at Limparongan site which comprises one-third of the total CADT areas in the uplands of Katagan Valley. Results showed that resin yield was directly proportional to diameter classes and number of cuts per tree. Tapped using the FPRDI method, the ten trees gave yields comparable with almaciga trees in Palawan and Samar. The potential yield per tree in Karagan Valley was 7 kg for trees with 135-188 cm dph (4-5 cuts/tree) and 4.5 kg for trees with 72-115 cm dbh (2-3 cuts/tree). Almaciga resin production as a livelihood option for the people of Karagan Valley was also evaluated using SWOT strength, weakness, opportunities and threat] analysis. The major strengths are: resins are of excellent quality like the Palawan resin; supply is abundant; and political support for the upland communities is fairly strong. Weaknesses include; the site is far from the market;lower price of alamaciga resin compared to crops currently being cultivated in the area; and poor infrastructure like poor roads, limited communication facilities and lack of electricity supply. There is an opportunity to commercially produce almaciga resin varnish in the region but overtapping of resin could threaten the venture in the long run.
