Design-II analysis for estimating combining ability and other genetic parameters in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)
2008
Baloch, A.W.
Present studies were conducted to estimate the general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of parents for some economic traits in cotton. The North Carollina Design-II analysis was used that involved eight parents of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) of which four were considered as females (1314-160, NB-999, NIBGE-2, and FH-901) and four as males (CIM-506, CIM-497, CIM-707, and RH-510). The characters studied were, plant height (cm), number of monopodial branches per plant, number of sympodial branches per plant, earliness (total number of bolls formed at 80 days), total number of bolls per plant, boll weight (g), seed cotton yield per plant (g) ginning outturn percentage, staple length (mm) and micronaire value (ug/inch). The mean squares due to crosses, female inbred, male inbred and their interactions were significant for all characters except GCA of females for number of monopodial branches per plant.
