In vitro study of the level and type of carbohydrate supplementation best suited to optimize the concentration of isomers of CLA in dairy cows on pasture

The effect of sunflower oil (0 or 3 per cent) supplementation of a mixed substrate with isoenergetic amounts of alfalfa hay or corn grain on the fermentation pattern was assayed in vitro in a 2x2 factorial design. Alfalfa promoted a faster start of gas production, high total VFA concentration, improved acetic acid proportion and cellulolytic bacteria (Ruminococcus albus and Fibrobacter succinogenes). Supplementation of the same amount of energy as corn grain improved propionic and butyric acids, the microbial fermentation and restricted that of cellulolytic bacteria. Besides, its higher content in linoleic acid promoted a higher synthesis of vaccenic and rumenic acids. No effect was observed in Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens proportion. Addition of oil in low proportion did not affect rumen fermentation being prevalent over that of the carbohydrate supplement but it also improved fatty acids profile in rumen, leading to an increase in the amount of conjugated linoleic acids in the medium
