The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) (50 Hz, 100-300 microT, 54-160 V/m) on the thyroid gland and skin of male Wistar rats from PND 23 to 53 and PND 68 to 95. Additionally, the combined effects of the EMFs and the endocrine disrupting compound atrazine (20 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw) in the younger group of rats was studied. Results of the histological and stereological analysis demonstrated the stimulative effect of the EMFs on the thyroid gland. Combined treatments with EMFs and atrazine displayed no prominent effect on the thyroid, but significantly affected the mast cells in the skin.
