At present brown adipose tissue (BAT) is considered not only as thermogenic, but also as an important endocrine organ, essential for the maintenance of the total energetic homeostasis of an organism. Its fascinating ability for remodeling (hyperplasia/atrophy) integrates the most intricate cellular and physiological processes such as proliferation and differentiation of brown adipocytes, angiogenesis, mitochondriogenesis, cell death, uncoupling, etc. At the same time, during the last century, free radical biology passed at path paved with thorns to reach the current concept of the redox regulation. In the present study, the above mentioned processes in BAT i.e. in brown adipocytes will be considered from the aspect of redox regulation paying a special attention to the participation of reactive species of oxygen and nitrogen, as well as of carbon monoxide.
