The role of cytochrome P450 in the metabolism of herbicides in plants is reviewed. Attention is especially focused on cytochrome P450 due to its role in herbicide metabolism in plants, and their roles in herbicide detoxication, demineralization, redox, dehydration, desulfurization, and isomerization are explained. Examples are given that show the functioning of cytochrome P450 in biosynthetic processes, and its role in the metabolism of some herbicides in several cultivated and weed plant species. Great diversity of structure, functioning and number of cytochromes, accompanied by a considerable divergence of their respective genes, indicate the complexity of role and activity of cytochromes in metabolic processes of herbicides in plants. The fact that a large number of cytochrome P450 genes have been found in plants (510 genes classified into 52 families) is an additional indication of the intricacy of structure and functioning of cytochrome P450, its evolution and genetic regulation of its activity.
