The process of transition in the agricultural sector in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe began two decades ago and significantly changed their agricultural structure. Today, the structural characteristics of European agriculture vary more than in the pre-transitional period. Although most NMS implemented (and the countries of the Western Balkans are trying to implement) solutions that lead to greater compatibility with the EU model of agriculture based on family farms, the effects of reforms in the agricultural sector and rural economics are different. Structural changes in the Serbian agriculturte develop slowly, and policy that govern them is not clearly profiled. As a result, economic effects of the sector for the national economy are poorer than objectively possible, and the rural population is exposed to high risk of poverty. This paper considers basic models and effects of structural changes in the agricultural sector of the Central and Eastern European countries from the beginning of 1990s to the present, with special emphasis on Serbia.
