In order to determine the presence and spread of the infection of cats by Bartonella henselae, full feline blood samples have been collected, an epidemiological research has been conducted as well as the clinical examination. The laboratory examination applied has included the test of indirect immunofluorescence, as well as the isolation and identification of Bartonella henselae. The research has involved 40 cats. In the geographical area of Novi Sad and its surroundings, for the first time time in the Republic of Serbia, a presence of the infection caused by Bartonella henselae in the feline population has been determined. The most common clinical manifestation with seropositive cats have been gingivitis and lymphadenopathy. The risk factors for the occurrence of the feline infection caused by Bartonella henselae were the way of cats living and their eventual predatory behaviour. The determined high seroprevalence to Bartonella henselae points out to a possible risk of infecting humans who are in close contact with cats.
