Presence and activity of Sinorhizobium meliloti as the indicator of potential N2 fixation ability of TP Nikola Tesla Obrenovac [Serbia] surrounding soils

In this research, the number and efficiency of nodule bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti in the soil near the ash dump of the thermal plant Nikola Tesla (TENT B) - Obrenovac (Serbia) was examined, with the aim of establishing the influence of fly ash on the distribution, presence and activity of S. meliloti. Additionally, the aim was also to provide an insight into nitrogen fixating potential of the soil and the need to apply inoculation of alfalfa with the microbiological nitrogen fertilizer. The presence of S. meliloti was not detected in samples taken from the sites 100-670 m distant from the ash hole, while its presence on sites up to 2500 m distant from the ash hole was detected only on alfalfa fields. When it comes to greater distances, S. meliloti was present in soil samples where other agricultural plants, such as wheat and other cereals were also grown. S. meliloti presence, number and activity did not depend on soil type, and the most active isolates were isolated from those soils where alfalfa and wheat were present. S. meliloti was detected in 52.6% of samples. Out of the overall number of isolated strains, 78% of isolates showed activity in nitrogen fixation, however, only 30% had high and mean nitrogen-fixing efficiency.
