The paper shows rodent numbers as recorded over the past several years, discussing the critical moments for discovering and monitoring some of the their important species in alfalfa and clover, their biology and damage caused by them, and presenting a list of conventional (acute) and anticoagulant-based rodenticides. Apart from the anticoagulants of generations 1st and 2nd, to which rodents have already been found to develop resistance, products based on vitamin D-cholecalciferol have been at the focus of attention worldwide. Their mode of action is calcium mobilization from the bones and tissues, calcification of blood vessels, kidneys, liver and heart, which ultimately causes organ failure. Domestic products based on the oligoelement Se are being initially put to practice, their mode action being the replacement of SH functional enzymes with the S-S groups. No resistance to these products has been observed, and they have especially favourable toxicological and ecotoxicological characteristics.
