In this study, oil contaminated soil was investigated (soil samples were taken from bioremediation processes in a laboratory reactor, a biopile - composting and from phytoremediation). The counts of the representative physiological groups (organotrophs, lipolytic and hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria) and dehydrogenase and phosphatase activity were investigated, and the concentrations of total oil and mineral oils were also determined. Detection of hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria was carried out on modified plate media (Petrović et al., 2008) that allow simultaneous detection of the size and activity of bacteria. The results show the great importance of microbiological analysis in the characterization of oil contaminated soil, giving information which together with physical-chemical data, allow a complete picture of the extent and nature of soil contamination to be obtained and its possible impacts on the environment.
