Effects of plant population and seasonality on growth and yield of three okra cultivars (abelmoschus esculentus l. monech) under gezira conditions

Four field experiments were conducted for four consecutive seasons during 2005-2006 at Gezira Research Station farm, Agricultural Research Corporation to investigate the effects of season and intra- row spacing on the performance of some okra (Abelmoschus esculents L. Monech) cultivars. Three okra cultivars were used in this study namely, Pusaswani, Khartoumia and Clemson spineless. In the four experiments, plants were sown at four different intra- row spacing viz., 20, 30, 40 and 50cm. The experiments were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four replications. Characters studied included, growth attributes (plant height, number of branches per plant and number of leaves per plant) and yield parameters (number of pods per unit area, weight and color of pods).The results showed that season had significant effect on parameters studied. In this regard, kharif season had greater yield than summer and winter seasons. On the other hand, intra row spacing had significant effect on most of the parameters measured in this study. In this respect, increasing row spacing significantly increased number of branches and number of leaves per plant. However, generally yield and plant height increased with decreasing row spacing. The differences between the three cultivars were significant in all testing seasons. Khartoumia cultivar was taller and had higher yield but matured later as compared to Pusaswani and Clemson spineless. These results indicated that the 30cm was the optimum intra- row spacing in kharif seasons and 20cm was the best intra row spacing in summer and winter. The variety Khartoumia was the best performing in all seasons compare to Clemson spineless and Pusaswani
