Some aspects of biology, seasonal abundance and control of eggplant budworm scrobipalpa blapsigona Low. (lepidoptera: gelechiidae)

Eggplant budworm Scrobipalpa balpsigona is a major insect pest on eggplant. The larvae feed inside the buds which may drop down in large numbers resulting in reduction of the yield. The present work covered some aspects of the biology, seasonal abundance and control of this pest by using Agerin, Nimbcidine and Fastac. The study of the life cycle of S. balpsigona showed that, the mean duration of the egg stage was 4.6 ± 0.25 days. The insect passed through four larval instars with mean duration of 3.6 ± 0.51, 4.7 ± 0.69, 5.6 ± 0.50 and 6.6 ± 0.17 days, respectively. The pupal stage took 7.6 ± 0.48 days. The longevity of the adult male and female was 5.7 ± 2.38 and 9.9 ± 0.55 days, respectively. The pre-oviposition period, oviposition period and post oviposition periods were 1.2 ± 0.65, 6.2 ± 0.8 and 2.5 ± 0.51 days, respectively. The number of eggs laid by a single female ranged from 80 - 100 with an average of 90.1 ± 8.42. The study also showed that the peak of infestation by this pest coincides with the period of increasing of temperature and decreasing of relative humidity in May and June According to chemical control experiment, Nimbecidine 0.03% EC at 3.5 ml/liter of water and Fastac 10% EC at 9.3g a.i. /Fed. are the most effective against the eggplant budworm with highly significant reduction in percentage of fruit loss (29.98% and 29.26%) compared with Agerin 6.5% WP (43.92%) and the untreated control (55.58%), respectively
