Experiments presented in this paper were aimed to assess the effects of the alginite on growth and development of 4-years-old European silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) plants. The soil conditioner alginite positively influences the growth of silver fir and Norway spruce plants on seedbeds with mineral soil without special irrigation. The alginite was applied by fielding (10 and 15 kgper square m). The best results as measured by the height of the aboveground part, length of the root system and root-collar diameter were achieved using a content of alginite of 15 kg per square m and 10 kg per square m for silver fir and Norway spruce plants, respectively. The other investigated growth characteristics for silver fir plants suggest worsened growth with the application of alginite by fielding. One-way analysis of variance of weight characteristic of Norway spruce plants did not show significant differences. Alginite belongs to prospective compounds with a high content of humus and nutrients, and a good water-bearing capacity. The use of alginite in a nursery is advisable, but the time of cultivation of forest tree plants in the substrate as well as the dose of alginite to achieve optimum growth must be considered.
