The purpose of this paper is to determine the occurrence of weed species in the stands of arable crops in Slovakia. Weed monitoring was carried out on the selected Slovak farms with the different soil-climatic conditions during 1997-2004. Around 130 weed species/genera were recorded and evaluated. On the basis of this monitoring there was elaborated a weed classification based on economic importance and the weed species list. According to the results creeping thistle Cirsium arvense (L.) SCOP., Anthemis spp., Chenopodium spp., couch-grass Elytrigia repens (L.) DESV. and cleavers Galium aparine L. are the most offensive weeds in the crop stands in Slovakia. They range among the 24 economically most important weed species/genera; however, there are presented also economically less and low important weed species/genera.
