A comprehensive analysis of the spatial variability of soil compaction represented an input factor in a precision farming management focusing on a site-specific tillage (variable-depth tillage) technology. The over arching objective was to characterise soil compaction in terms of the size, thickness and the depth of compacted layers in three different soil types (sandy loam, loam, and clay loam soil). Submitted paper focuses on the proposal of a prescription map concerning variable-depth tillage. The prescription map was elaborated based on the analysis and synthesis of knowledge gained from the assessment of the within-field spatial variability during years 2005-2007. The investigation of spatial variability focused on 1) selected soil properties (soil texture, organic carbon and humus content, salinity, soil reaction, adsorption capacity and nutrient content, soil moisture content including data on rainfall, penetration resistance, electric conductivity), 2) agronomic indicators (crop yield, height and density of plants), and 3) landscape characteristics (field elevation and NDVI vegetation index). A prescription map design stems from the identification of existing interdependence within the weather-soil-plant system, and spatially specifies three different tillage depths, namely 0.25 m, 0.35 m, and 0.45 m.
