Changes in carotenoid composition under heat shock (HS, 42 deg C, 3 h) in leaves of etiolated seedlings of hexaploid triticale with different types of intergenomic chromosome substitutions were investigated. New data on changes in xantophyll content in etiolated seedlings under temperature stress were obtained. Metabolic heterogeneity of the violaxanthin pool and a different character of stress response of seedlings at the xanthophylls level has been detected. Owing to this fact the investigated genotypes can be divided into two groups according to the initial content of violaxanthin as well as to the degree of violaxanthin de-epoxidation. Thus, the first group (the lines WRAI1S-1, WRAIIS-2 and WRAHS-3) was characterized by lover relative content of violaxanthin in the control lines combined with a higher degree of its de-epoxidation. In the second group (the lines WRAHS-4, WRAHS-5 and WRAHS-6), a higher initial content of violaxanthin but approximately two times lower degree of de-epoxidation in comparison to the first group was revealed. Distinctions of carotenoid interconversions are discussed as an important selection criterion of triticale seedling sensitivity to HS.
