In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus in 2006-2008 there was analyzed initial material for breeding of spring barley (Hordeum vulgare) on sod-podzolic sub-acid light clayey soil with high phosphorus and potassium content. Collection samples of spring barley of national selection and samples brought from the Russian Federation, Ukraine were used as parent materials. Research results showed the most valuable barley samples for the breeding of fodder varieties of spring barley: Vodogaj; Belgorodets; Astoria; Gorinskij; as well as for breeding of malting barley varieties: Inari; Stratus; Adagio. Variety Vodogaj had the highest yield with high seed mass of 1000 seeds. Variety Belgorodets had high and stable yield and large seeds with high protein content. Variety Astoria was stunting and had stable yield. Sample Inari was suitable for brewing because of high yield short footstalk and low content of protein. Varieties Sebasian and Ca 113722 (k-29886) were useful for brewing, too. There were no any connection between the yield, protein number and seed size as results of correlation analyze. It showed that spring barley could be used for brewing and feeding. Increasing of barley ability to tillering led to yield increasing.
