The aim of our study was to analyse the relationship between the body condition score (BCS) and results of metabolic profile tests in dairy cows. Blood and urine samples were taken from 1,984 clinically healthy cows in 49 farms in Hungary. BCS values decreased from the 1st day of lactation onwards until the 44th day and slightly increased until the day 218 thereafter. The trends of the changing values of haemoglobin, glucose, aceto-acetic acid, non-esterified fatty acids and aspartate aminotransferase follow the curve of condition change simultaneously. The critical periods of lactation could be astablished using BCS and metabolic profile tests in high-yielding dairy cows.
