The effect of salinization was evaluated in six varieties of spring barley. Four modern varieties (Jersey, Malz, Krone and Amulet) and two old varieties (Valticky and Norimberk) were cultivated under controlled conditions in an air conditioned chamber using hydroponics. After five days of cultivation in a solution with 0.15 mol/L NaCl, the variety Norimberk showed the lowest osmotic potential, whereas the varieties Malz and Krone showed the highest osmotic potential. An increase in proline content was recorded in all varieties. The highest proline content was recorded in the varieties Norimberk, Valticky and Jersey. A positive correlation between proline levels and osmotic potential was observed.
