The aim of this trial was to study the effect of dietary lysine (Lys) level on productive performance of pigs slaughtered at 113 kg BW. A total of 480 pigs (Large White x Landrace females crossed with Duroc male) with PIC 410 sires were used. Half of the animals were gilts (GI) and half were castrated males (CM) at 4 days. The feeding program consisted of five periods with all diets having the same NE content. For each feeding period, five diets were formulated that had the same NE content but differed in Lys content (control diet and +/- 6 and +/- 12% over the control diet). Each treatment was replicated 8 times (12 pigs / department; 6 CM and 6 GI). The experimental unit was the pen. From 26 to 44 kg BW, pigs fed diets with +12%, +6% Lys had better FCR than those fed with control diet and with diets with -6% and -12% Lys (P < 0.001). From 63 to 80 kg BW pigs fed diets with +12% and +6% Lys had better FCR than those with -6 and -12% Lys (P = 0.029), with pigs fed the control diet being intermediate. Cumulatively, pigs fed +12% and +6% Lys diets had better FCR (P < 0.05) than pigs fed -6% and -12% Lys diets. It is recommended to use 1.08%, 0.91%, 0.80%, 0.70% and 0.58% digestible Lys for each of the periods considered.
