Preliminary study of the native cattle of Kurdistan

In order to investigate the native cattle of Kurdistan province situation, 5 percent of total villages (93 villages) of the province were selected according to randomized classification sampling method. A questionerey that contains maney qustions about, apparent characteristics, production and reproduction traits, rearing place situation, feeds and feeding, hygienic situation, prevalent diseases and farmer problems was prepared dnring two years (1993 and1994). The questioneries were completed for each small holder perselected in the villages and the colected data were analyzed. In addition carcass weight of slaughtered native cattle were collected from slaughter house. Results show that: 1-Native cattles bodies size are small to medium and their colores are preponderantly black or brown. 2-ln plain area they have greater body size and more milk production than mountaineer areas. 3- Their average milk production, milking period and dry period were 600 to 700 liters, 6 to 7 months and 5 months, respectively. 4- Puberty age in male and female calves were 12 to 15 and 14 to 15 months, respectively and first calving occures mostly at the age of three years. 5- Due to cold climate condition of province cattle are keped in packed house, 83 percent of these places have been made traditionaly. 6- In grazing season, the cattle graze on pastures and are being sometimes fed with supplement at the early and last weeks of this period. In the last part of autumn and whole winter, the cattle are being fed in the stables.7- Special charactristics of Kurdistan native cattle are: High variation in production traits, - Resistance to harsh invironmental condutions, - Resistance to endemic diseases, - Contented to Iow quaclty feed,. - Long lifetime (Iongivity) , - Production of meat and milk in special condition of the province, - And making employment.
