Physical, chemical and microbiological properties of earthworm meal in comparison with fish meal
2008
Ebadi , Zahra
An experiment was conducted to compare physical, chemical and microbiological of earthworm meal with fish meal (domestic and imported). For this purpose, dry matter, ash, crude protein (CP), fat, gross energy, mineral matters (ca, p, mg and k) and pH were determined. Total bacteria count, mold and yeast contamination of meals were measured. Dry matter percentage of CP of imported and domestic fish meal was 64.12, 63.2 respectively and CP of earthworm meal was 55.02 (% dry matter). The amount of crude fat of domestic fish meal (16.75 % dry matter) was higher than earthworm and imported fish meals, consequently had higher amount of gross energy (5116.6 cal/gr). The percentage of ash in imported fish meal (17.78 % dry matter) was higher than domestic fish meal and earthworm meal. The amount of calcium and phosphorus of earthworm meal was lower than fish meals. Microbiological assay showed that earthworm meal from hygienic point of view was acceptable according to Iranian standard. It is concluded from the results of this experiment that the properties of earthworm meal is suitable and could be used as protein concentration in animal, poultry and fish feeding
