Due to growing demand of fuel, grey alder should be evaluated as a fast growing tree species, which can produce significant amount of biomass for bioenergy production in a short period of time. Research of grey alder has achieved significant topicality at the beginning of the twenty first century. The aim of research was to evaluate the harvestable stock above-ground biomass of grey alder stands in relation to the structure stands. Grey alder stands cover 190.6 thousand ha, which is equal to 6.8% from the total forest area in Latvia and has a total yield of 31.3 million m**3. Increasing deficit of fuel stresses the need to research for alternative energy resources for heating purposes. The growing stock in the studied 20-30 year old grey alder stands representing different site indexes can be approximated by using the power regression equation y=ax**b. The growing stock does not differ significantly in stands representing different sites indexes. Growing stock of the most productive stands varies between 170 and 410 m**3haE-1. High growing stock is characteristics, both of stands with large number of trees (5500-6600 trees haE-1) and stands with relatively small number of trees (up to 2200 trees haE-1).
