Garcinia prainiana King (Guttiferae) is locally known as either kecupu, cerapu or mencupu. The sweet and sour fruits are often eaten, and the wood is used for house-building. However, the use of the plant in traditional medicine is not known. Based on the WHO methods, a pharmacognostical study was carried out on the leaf of G. prainiana. The leaf was dark glossy green, subsessile, ovate-oblong with heart-shaped base and acute apex, and had margin weakly recurved. The powdered leaf was found to be dark green, odourless and bitter. Microscopical analysis revealed the presence of upper epidermal fragment, prism- and cluster¬typed calcium oxalate crystals, anomocytic stomata, elongated thin-walled palisade cells, wavy epidermal cells, round-shaped colenchymal cells, papillae, sclereids, lignified vessels with spiral thickening, lignified fibres, unicellular and multicellular covering trichomes, and cystoliths. Distinct colours were observed when th e powdered leaf was reacted with chemical reagents. Thin layer chromatographic analysis using silica gel showed that the ethanolic (96%) extract of G. prainiana leaf had various phytocompounds. The extractive values of the powdered leaf for ethanol-soluble, and water-soluble using hot and cold methods were obtained as 6.85%,3.63% and 2.21 % respectively. Determination of moisture content using loss on drying method was 11.37%. The preliminary data obtained in the study could be used in the construction of a monograph of G. prainiana for identification and authentication of the plant.
