If Malaysia wanted to go further in venturing into the business of medicinal plants and its products, the most important task is to develop a national strategy on the conservation and sustainable use of our medicinal plants in order to balance the biological and commercial needs. We can start with a dialogue whereby a working group should be formed and find means to: -improve knowledge of the current situation - improve policy as necessary -increase capacity to address conservation and health needs. Following the above objectives we should develop a joint strategy where we should promote: 1. Proper inventory system of medicinal plants(species distribution, populations) 2. Sustainable harvesting (especially wild species) 3. Encourage in situ conservation. 4. Promote ex situ conservation where applicable. 5. Improve technique for harvesting, storage and production. 6. Effective policy and regulations. 7. Increase public awareness on the conserv ation issues of medicinal plants (especially indigenous communities and harvesters/ collectors) 8. Generating financial support for native medicinal plant projects.
