The first generation of GM crops involving input traits such as herbicide tolerance and insect resistance in corn and soybean dominate the GM crops planted worldwide. GM corn and soybean are mostly grown for animal feed and therefore it is imperative that their safety be established for the livestock, poultry and aquaculture industry stakeholders and the public consumers of animal derived products. Central to the issue of GM crops as animal feed is the possibility of unintended effects that may result during the genetic modification process and may affect their nutritional composition and the availability of these nutrients during animal feeding. These concerns are addressed through rigorous nutritional assessment of GM crops specifically the utilization of compositional analyses and animal feeding studies comparing the GM crops with their traditional or conventional counterparts. Another concern is the digestive and metabolic fate of the transgene(DNA) and the novel protein in animals. This can be addressed by the use of sensitive detection methods such as PCR [polymerase chain reaction] and ELISA [enzyme link immunosorbent assay] in the analyses of simulated in vitro gastric and intestinal digestibility studies of the pure novel protein and the presence of the transgene (DNA) and the novel protein in the animal derived products such as meat, milk and eggs. The biosafety of first generation GM crops and animal feeds, being a technological issue, can be addressed by science-based investigations and risk assessment. The challenge for science will be the second generation of GM crops intentionally altered for specific nutritional traits and future generations of GM crops aimed at becoming green factories for pharmaceutical and industrial proteins.
