Mong Cai (MC) is a famous native breed of pig in Vietnam. It has good characteristics, which include early sexual maturity, large litter size at birth of 11.5-13 total number of piglets and 11-12 piglets born alive, good mothering ability, high farrowing index of 2.1-2.2 litters/sow/yr, good sow longevity of 10-15 litters, and good adaptability to harsh conditions. However, the MC pig has also some negative characteristics such as low average daily gain (367.27-381.00 g), low lean meat percentage (35.38-36.56%) and thick back fat (33.52-34.37 mm). Despite the good characteristics, the population inventory of the MC pig decreased in the 1980s due to economic pressure. During the past 20 years (1990-2010), the MC pig is being preserved under the National Program on Genetic Resources Conservation. Starting the year 2000, the MC pig has become the major sow line for the production of breeding stocks in Vietnam
