Effect of different sowing dates on the growth and yield of different varieties of sesame Sesamum indicum L.
2009
Khaskheli, I.A.
The treatments included two sesame varieties i.e. V1 = S-17 and V2 = Pr-19, and four sowing dates such as S1 = 1st May, S2 = 15th May, S3 = 1st June and S4 = 15th June. The results revealed that all the growth and seed yield components as well as oil content was significantly (P less than 0.01) affected by varieties and sowing dates. The 1st May sowing produced flowering in 61.76 days, attained maturity in 120.16 days with 165.90 cm plant height, 10.83 branches per plant, 145.00 number of capsules per plant, 42.40 number of seeds per capsule, 0.65 g weight of seeds per plant, 0.43 g seed index, 0.70 kg seed yield per plot, 1137.50 kg seed yield per ha, 8.91% harvest index and 50.11% oil content. The crop sown on 15th May produced flowering in 65.03 days, attained maturity in 136.06 days with 155.06 cm plant height, 7.76 branches per plant, 128.60 number of capsules per plant, 44.80 number of seeds per capsule, 0.65 g weight of seeds per plant, 0.44 g seed index.
