The extracted unsaponifiable constituents 1.5-2.31% from three varieties of Mangifera indica kernels i.e., Chaunsa, Sindhri, and Desi have been fractionated by preparative TLC into 4,4'-dimethylsterols, 15.1-16.0%, 4-methylsterols; 6.4-7.0% and 4-demethylsterols; 53.5-53.8% respectively. The 4,4'-dimethylsterol fraction contains highest percentage of lupeol, 19.2-22.7%. The 4,4'-dimethylsterols, beta-amyrin, cycloartenol, alpha-amyrin and 24-methylene cycloartanol were also identified by GLC. The gramisterol, lophenol, obtusifoliol and citrostadienol were tentatively identified in 4-monomethyl fractions. The gramisterol, 48.0-50.7% is predominant in this fraction. Beta-sitosterol, 47-76%, stigmasterol; 12-23% and campesterol, 7-12 % are the major constituents of 4-demethylsterols. The waste kernels fat is a rich source of sterols as compare to usual vegetable oils and fats.
