Ecosystem approach to fisheries management in the Mediterranean

The discussion on EAF (Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries) has moved from definitions and principles to an international call for its implementation to secure the sustainable use of marine and freshwater ecosystems for the benefit of present and future generations. The EAF concept has reached a point of general acceptance by those involved in fisheries and their management and the global political drive is there. However, many countries and regions are still grappling with understanding and interpreting the concept for application within their own context. This paper attempts to address this problem by clarifying the concept, with specific reference to the Mediterranean, identifying some of the more pressing issues in the region and discussing some of the necessary steps to progress in the implementation of EAF
