The aim of the study was to determine whether the phages could be used as antimicrobial agents, as they are viruses capable to lyse bacterial cells. In the thesis, the results of Pseudomonas specific phage isolation from various environments were presented, and their antimicrobial potential was determined. Accordingly, properties of selected phages were examined - morphology, protein profiles, characteristics of genome and potential receptors. In addition, adsorption and stability of phages in various environmental conditions were examined, as well as appearance of bacterial mutants resistant to phages. The lytic efficacy of phages - their growth and biofilm formation inhibition, as well as effect on already formed biofilm was determined using the colorimetric microtitre plate methods. The possible combinations of phages and antibiotics were also examined, and synergy among all phages and ceftriaxone was observed. According to the results, it is obvious that the phages have a great potential to be used as alternative antimicrobial agents to combat multiple resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
