The efficacy assessment of the different time colostrum feeding on the level of serume immunoglobulines in newborn calves

The first colostrum of cow is very important for the newborn calf, because of the nutrients which it contains and because of biologically active molecules (the most important of them are antimicrobial factors – immunoglobulins, which provide passive immunity of the calf and protect its body from infection during the first weeks of life). The aim of this study was to examine: the influence of time of the first introduces colostrum and benefits of offering multiple times drinking colostrum in the first 12 hours of life on the concentration of blood immunoglobulin in first 24 hours of life. In this study we monitored 96 calves, which were divided into three groups. A group (n=23) of calves were fed once in the first 12 hours of life at different times from birth (0-12 hours). Calves in group B (n=35) the first colostrum had to drink in the first 2 hours of life. Calves C groups (n=37) were fed in three meals, the first meal was over 15th minutes of birth, the second meal was 4th hours after birth and the third 12th hours after birth. Immunoglobulin concentration in the blood serum of calves was determined by the method of zinc sulfate turbidity (ZTT). Concentration of immunoglobulin in blood serum was: in group A, 20.2 g/L; in group B, 27.18 g/L and in group C, 43.22 g/L. Interval of variation in all groups was 4 – 64.8 g/L, which indicated a significant statistical difference in the mean values (p is less than 0.001). In order to achieve adequate passive immunity of calves it is necessary to ensure that calves take of colostrum in the first two hours of life, and one more time until 12 hours after birth.
