The influence of adding different forms of selenium in the diet for dairy cows on the quantity and quality of milk

Selenium (Se) is one of the essential elements required for animal and human nutrition. Selenium is added in the diet of dairy cows in order to protect animals from the risk of deficiency in this element and to increase the amount of selenium in milk. It would be beneficial for the offspring and the human population, which uses milk and other dairy products as an important part of the diet. Quality and safety of milk are important for both people and animals. The recommended range for the concentration of selenium in serum is from 70 to 100 ng Se/ml for dairy cow. This concentration can be achieve by providing greater than 6 mg of selenium in the diet per animal per day, but the concentration in serum due to several factors such as different forms of selenium in animal feed, the conditions in the rumen, fat, calcium, trace elements and genetics. This paper presents the effect of different forms of selenium on selenium status in the body, the health of the mammary gland, milk quality and increasing amounts of selenium in the milk after meals supplemented with selenized yeast. Thus it may affect the status of this antioxidant in milk from dairy cows early lactation and improve its antioxidant capacity. On the utilization of selenium in the body affect other micronutrients such as copper, zinc, iron and manganese, and their amount in food and body. Application of balanced meal according to the latest standards in all indicators of nutrition at the stage of dry period and early lactation guarantee good production and reproductive performance of cows.
