Yugoslav Mountain Pony is an autochthnous horse breed in extremely harsh habitats of mountain region expanding from Stara and Suva Mountain on East to Adriatic Sea on the West, from Sava and Danube river on the North to Šara Mountain, Prokletije and Kom, on the South. Although the dispersed natural habitat of this horse is biogeographically divided by natural barriers, all ponies within the mountain region of Serbia and Montenegro are considered unique population and there are no types described within this autochthnous breed. The population of mountain pony in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been selected and a descendant breed Bosnian Pony was developed by crossing local mares with Arabian stallions. Bosnian Pony population is breed upon the authorities of Bosnian Pony Stud Book. A total of 77 individuals of ancestral Yugoslav Mountain pony population and 24 Bosnian ponies, both sexes included, have been hemotyped and polymorphism at 8 biochemical loci was established in each population. The aim of the evaluation was to establish characteristic distribution of allelic genes within 8 biochemical systems: Al, Pi, Xk, Tf, Gc, Es, PGD and GPI, to determine genetic homogeneity in each population evaluated and to estimate parentage exclusion probability per loci and combined parentage exclusion probability for 8 tested loci as a panel. Furthermore, the aim of the evaluation was to determine the genetic distance according to Nei among Yugoslav Mountain pony as ancestor, the descending Bosnian pony and the main ameliorator breed, Arab. Having in mind the accepted theory on Przewalskii and Tarpan origin of the autochthnous breed one of the goals was to evaluate if any Przewalskii specific alleles was present in the autochthonous populations.
