This paper deals with methods for optimization of waste heat recovery system in paper industry. Some of the discussed methods are field measurements, analytical calculations (i.e. material and heat balances) and finally numerical simulation. All of the methods have been applied in Umka cardboard mill. The main results and their comparison are presented in this paper with emphasise on the results of numerical simulation. Large quantities of heat and water vapour are realised from cardboard machine into the hall during cardboard manufacturing. The results of field measurements indicate that there are certain potentials for heat recovery in the air that is accumulated below the hall ceiling and extracted by the ventilation system. After having analyzed the heat potentials, employment of regenerative pebble-bed heat exchangers was considered. Since the temperature and moisture distribution vary significantly with space additional information is required in order to find the most favourable locations for heat exchangers intake connections. For that reason a numerical simulation of airflow patterns in the hall had to be performed. The aim of this simulation was to supplement the anlaytical approach while field measurements were used to validite both approaches.
