Breeding of sweet and sour cherry in Hungary
2011
Apostol, J., Research Institute for Fruitgrowing and Ornamentals, Budapest (Hungary)
The Hungarian sweet and sour cherry breeding has been going on since 1950. In the frame of this programme are 13 released and 1 candidate sweet cherry variaties, and 9 released and 2 candidate sour cherry varieties. In this lecture there is given a brief overview of the cherry breeding work done of the Hungarian Research Institute for Fruitgrowing and Ornamentals during the last 60 years. Within that period there were several changes of the maintaining institution, of the breeding persons, somehow also changes of the breeding aims, only the intensity of work was unchanged. Conventional methods of breeding have given a great deal of economically appreciable results. We are convinced that the genetically substance of the actual plant material has great capabilities of further combinations in the practice. The method of cross breeding is still competitive with genetically modification, as in the case of tree fruit breeding - in case of any breeding method - the works of evaluation and selection are those that want great competence and many years time. At present the base of selections are more than 2700 sweet and 1554 sour cherry seedlings, one to eight years old.
