This paper presents the results of vegetative and pomological characteristics of the promising Hungarian and Canadian sweet cherry varieties, determined by the genetic potential for yield, generative and vegetative buds distribution on one and two-year old branches, the total number of flowers and fruits. Many standard varieties enter the stage of reproductive maturity late, and the yield potential is significantly lower. Number of fruits on a two-year branches ranged from 14 in variety Burlat, to 221 in the variety Alex, while the weight of the same fruits ranged form 6.3 g in Aida to 12 g in Carmen without irrigation, mineral and foliar nutrition. This paper provides the possibility of extending the harvest season for more than two weeks and the improvement of fruit quality in size, taste, firmness and color of the fruit. Fruit cracking caused by heavy rain during maturation, ranged depending in the variety from 0% in resistant varieties Katalin and Linda, to 90% in Newstar. Varieties that deserve their expansion by productivity and quality, are very early ripening variety Rita, early variety Carmen, medium late varieties Linda and Germersdorfi (clone 3), and very late ripening varieties Katalin and Alex.
