Searching for growth reducing cherry rootstocks, research has produced numerous selections of Oblacinska sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) and ground cherry (Prunus fruticosa Pall.). Selection of Oblacinska sour cherry is the result of the positive clone selection in the range of its origin and the highest prevalence, while selection of ground cherry is a result of individual positive selection. Basically selection criteria meant the search for unique and rare features of importance for the realization of the set of breeding objectives. Collected biodiversity is another confirmation that the Balkan Peninsula is one of the most valuable secondary centers of genetic diversity and inexhaustible gene pool for breeding work. Morphometric features enabled determination of high genetic variability of the initial material. Anatomic rootstock's features, such as root diameter, phloem/xylem ratio and number of vessels, showed great branch characteristic measurements was to develop pre-selection method based on phloem/xylem ratio and xylem anatomical structures. The data suggest that phenotypic differences in rootstock xylem anatomy can influence the conductivity of the water capacity and thus be major selection parameters in breeding dwarfing rootstocks. Results of anatomic features contribute to results of rootstock trial in the nursery and field. Correlation coefficient (r) between vigour of one-year-old trees of five cherry variaties grafted on five rootstocks and total area of the tracheas, amounts 0.47, with the critical tabular value 0.31 (confidence limit 95%).
