One of the important factor for the successful selection is existence of genetic variability in selection material. Domestic local populations of forage species are characterized by a wide genetic base and excellent adaptability on environment conditions. They are rich sources of variability for field persistance which is major factor for high and stable forage yield during all period of exploitation, which is of crucial importance for perennial species. The local population were the basic breeding material for the first varieties of alfalfa, red clover and birdsfoot trefoil. Wild flora of Serbia is also rich resources for the forage species, especially of the genus Trifolium, Medicago and Lotus, as well as a large number of genera in the family Poaceae. During the past few years in several expedition, collecting of wild populations of these species were organized. Expedition with the aim of collecting and evaluating wild populations are usual activities of the Institute of Forage Crops. A rich collection of domestic and wild populations of forage legumes and grasses, collected from the different sities in Serbia, partly kept in the gene bank of Serbia, as well as in a cold chamber of the Institute of Forage Crops. In field trials collected populations showed significant differences both between and within populations raised for most of the investigated traits.
