The aim of this study was examine the variability of important quantitative root traits in sugar beet and enable selection of appropriate genotypes for further breeding. In this research were included 10 monogerm and 10 multigerm genotypes, which were chosen according to different ancestry and phenotype. Caracteristics of roots were tracked during 2008. The experiment was set at an experimental field of the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Serbia) in a randomized complete block system with three replications. Ten roots were examined in each replication. The study included five quantitative traits of sugar beet: root weight, dry matter content, root head ratio, root length and root diameter. Selected characteristics are quantitatively expressed through the mean value and standard deviation. Multigerm genotypes showed a greater weight, length and diameter of the root, while the root head ratio was higher in monogerm genotypes. For dry matter content, there was no difference between these two groups of genotypes. Multigerm genotypes showed greater variability in all traits compared to monogerm genotypes.
