Maize breeding of today, as well as in the near future, depends upon traits maintained within existing germplasm. The material maintained in the Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (Serbia) gene bank offers the great opportunities for breeding, considering its size and content. According to field testing for drought tolerance, caring out under severe drought conditions in Egypt, as well as under drought in moderate climate conditions in Zemun Polje (Serbia) and Skopje (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), we chose five inbred lines for further investigations under controlled conditions. Osmotic stress caused by drought is one of the most important abiotic stresses. In this study osmotic stress was applied with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 10000. The responce to PEG tretman of these genotypes was analyzed in respect to their root morphology, root and shoot lenght, root and shoot fresh and dry weight and proline content. Results showed that the root and shoot development was less in all genotypes under PEG tretman and that the proline content generally increased in PEG- treated plants.
