The implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention) in the Republic of Serbia is being realized through capacity building and conduction of obligations from these documents, as well as the transposition of the latest international standards in this field. The main goals of CBD are conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of biological resources and equal sharing of benefits which derives from the use of genetic resources and biotechnologies. The rapid socioeconomic development exerts permanent pressure on ecosystems and biodiversity components (genetic, species and ecosystem) and ecosystem services. During the Belgrade Ministerial Conference, the Belgrade Declaration on halting the loss of biodiversity until 2010 was adopted, within which special emphasis was placed on the synergy between development policies of different sectors which result in degradation or changes to habitats (agriculture, urbanization, spatial planning) projects and norms for realizing obligations from Biodiversity related conventions, negative impact of invasive alloctone species, GMOs, etc. The main principles of the Ramsar Convention include: 'Wise use' (a term equivalent to 'sustainable development') of wetland areas; fundamental ecological functions of aquatic ecosystems as water regime regulators and as habitats of flora and fauna, especially waterfowl and migratory birds; natural resource of considerable economic, cultural, scientific and recreational value; coordinated international cooperation at all levels (international, regional, national) in terms of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and aquatic ecosystem resources.
