The aim of this study was to examine the total content of phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity of methanol extracts of plants Verbascum phlomoides, Verbascum thapsus and verbascum nigrum of the genus verbascum (Scrophulariaceae) as a potential sources of natural antioxidans/preservatives. The highest total phenoloic content was found in V. thapsus (96.5 mg GA/g) whereas the largest amount of flavonoides was present in V. nigrum methanolic extract (45.6 mg RU). The highest total antioxidant capacity (445.5 mg AA/g), as ell as DPPH scavenging activity (IC50=63.7 micro g/mL) was determined for V. thapsus methanolic extract.
