As an information, this paper describes the most significant methods of remote sensing used in modern forest inventories. As the most significant results in the application of remote sensing methods to date have been achieved in mapping, classification, and monitoring of forests and forest lands, the focus is on the study of the potentials and efficiency of the techniques in the assessment of the sizes of taxation elements of trees and stands. It deals with the measurement and processing of dendrometric values on the digitalised aerial photographs and satellite images of high resolution, as well as with the application of airborne laser scanning. By all means, the key question is related to the accurate estimation of volume, biomass, and volume increment. Based on the study of relevant literature and the study of forest state, it is concluded that modern methods of remote sensing (airborne laser scanning with two-phase sampling) in our forests can be applied only selectively.
