The possibility of fungal infection of sunflower seeds, harvested in 2006, is discussed in this paper, with special attention to the share of aflatoxigenic species in isolated mycopopulations. Mycological investigations were carried out in samples of sunflower seed during storage, after cleaning and drying as well as after dehulling, grinding and thermic treatment. The experiments were done in triplicate. Using two mycological media (SMA and MY50G) comparativelly, by direct plating and Koch s method, it was established that all tested samples, except the heat treated ones, were contaminated with moulds. The treated sample was found to be free of fungi because of its previous thermal treatment (t 80 90 deg C). Isolated fungi were classified into 11 genera and 22 species. Among the aflatoxigenic fungi different species were found as follows: Aspergillus flavus, A. oryzae and A. niger, with various frequency in mycopopulations. A. flavus was isolated from all samples examined, with a share in mycopopulations from 20 to 55%. Two samples were contaminated with A. oryzae (share in mycopopulations between 1 and 9%) and one by A. niger (share in mycopopulation about 10%).
